It's a problem with Safari, specifically.  It's always been there, and I
have never been able to track down what the exact cause is.  It's not like
we're doing anything special with the HTML, plus the only Javascript is the
small Google Analytics reference.  Plus, every other browser in existence
works just fine.

Friedrich,

I finally found Safari's development tools (Smiley and it appears that Safari
is having trouble coping with the stylesheet rules that we have.  I'll see
if I can simplify them so that it doesn't confuse the browser as much.  The
initial page loads in about 203ms, and the CSS loads in about 30 seconds.

Friedrich,

Yes !!  I finally found the problem and fixed it.  There was an issue with
Safari and our web server, whereby if the web server sent back response
headers in response to an "if-modified" request from Safari, Safari would
then think that content was coming even though the status that the web
server sent back was "not modified".  The web server just sent the
additional response headers to indicate information about the resource, and
this was fine with every browser except for Safari, which ignored the
status.  Don't ask me why they're doing that.

At any rate, the site now works faster in Safari than in IE, and the problem
is resolved.

Thanks for your patience on this one,
