I've just used my first COMPUTED column in an index.  I've probably slipped a cog here but since COMPUTED columns are not stored and calculated on the fly (at least that's my understanding) how does it work?

Exactly as if it was a stored column, except for the fact that the value is computed when needed when the index has to be updated or used as well as when the value is retrieved from the table.

But is the index stored? Or is it continually being updated or what?
