Lance Rasmussen CDE Software Team Elevate | It's been at least about 10 hours since the release of Delphi XE8. Where's the source/installer updates for EDB and XE8?

Shane Sturgeon | Hi Lance
I'm trying to decide if I should renew my support agreement or only use XE8 for non EDB work. The lack of response and no indications anywhere else I can see on the website indicating support for XE8 is not encouraging. Did you happen to find out via other means if XE8 was supported? XE8 was just released some 10 days ago so there would be no website updates for it. It usually takes about a month or so for EDB and DBISAM to get new releases with official XE8 support. If you have the source code editions then you should be able to compile components yourself if in a hurry (considering there are barely any VCL changes in XE8 the recompile should be extra easy). This has always been an issue for Delphi, and more so now they are releasing every 6 months. Not only with components, but with the show-stopper bugs that need to get the fixes too. What I used to do when I subcribed to Delphi was install the new version when it came out, and then ignore it. Any new or updated components would then be installed into the new version but I could be productive in the old still. At some point I'd have a free moment, finish any other component updates, and could switch. But it is practically impossible for every component vendor to have an update within a month of release, so there will always be a delay. The source is there if you care deeply, but a fully tested version will take a [short, really] while. -- Matthew Jones |

Why on earth would you think that we wouldn't support XE8 ? I'm pretty busy over the past few years with 3 products, so it normally takes me a couple of weeks to get out support for a new compiler version. It's just a matter of finding the time. For the record, we *always* support new Delphi versions, and always will. The issue is that the bi-yearly releases usually catch us out because we're in the middle of something else. In this case, we're releasing EWB 2 this week. Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |

Lance Rasmussen CDE Software Team Elevate | I'll chime in as well in addition to Tim's comment.
Tim has ALWAYS supported the next gen IDE's for EDB. He's even been doing it with DBISAM. It would be nice if they were ready before or at release of the next gen IDE, but that's me simply saying it would be nice. And I'm also very well aware that Tim is one busy dude, as he explained. But I would never base my decision on renewing on that, especially with the quality of the product that it is. I would definitely encourage you to continue your support with Elevate, without hesitation. I use a lot of 3rd party components. For at least XE2 through XE8, generally I find the last stragglers to the compatibility party to be DevExpress, nSoftware, RemObjects SDK and Elevate. With Julian and the gang at DevExpress, it will get there when it gets there (which was a couple days ago for XE8). nSoftware releases their updates quarterly, but are generally very good about getting access to getting a beta build compatible with the new IDE, if you give them the list of what you really need. RemObjects usually will have a beta available fairly soon after a new IDE release. With Elevate, generally, as mentioned also, if you have the source code version, you could usually make minor changes to get it working. Btw - I only really made the initial post because I like to kid with Tim as well as act as a preventative for others who would ask the same question. I've seen posts with other companies where people have been literally hounding the component developer 10-15 minutes after Embarcadero sends their new license asking if a component is ready. Shane Sturgeon | Thanks Lance
Just to clarify - I know and accept all the points about EDB supporting latest Delphi releases etc. My post was not about that, and for the record I don't care how long it takes for XE8 support to be ready. I was really only wanting to know when it was done. My post was more about knowing what I am getting for my money. For a long time I paid my annual maintenance without even thinking about it. Tim was always good at answering questions, the product was good, and I felt good about supporting another developer. Then the support model changed, and in my view all I receive now for my annual fee is updates (i.e. no support). I accept that good support is available via this group, and while I think that is great, I am not paying you for that, and as far as I know, Tim is not employing people here to provide support, so my $100 a year ONLY covers updates. By his own admission, Tim has not been focusing on EDB, and that has been apparent to me for some time, so when my support last came up for renewal, I decided I'd had enough and would renew when it was to my benefit to do so (i.e I no longer have that good feeling about supporting another developer in this case). And if that time doesn't come prior to me losing the ability to renew my support, then it's a definite sign that it's time to move to another DB. I saw your post Lance, and I would have expected a quick response from the developer to simply a) acknowledge the joke (it was obviously in fun), and b) a one liner to say "yep - am working on it and expect it in a couple of weeks (or whenever). If I'd seen some indication like that I probably would have already renewed, given I have just updated to XE8 and there is now some (albeit minor - I don't consider just recompiling for the latest compiler to be the only updates a developer needs to be doing for a support contract, and am abandoning another supplier for just that) benefit in renewing. When I saw no response for quite a period, I made the assumption that perhaps the update was already in the download area, but of course because I have lapsed my support, I can not see any new updates (and there is no release notes I saw on the site when I went looking that indicated it had been updated), so my question was really just asking if you Lance had any other knowledge about updates (i.e. the last line of my original post). I checked, and you have 5 support sessions left. If there was there any situation where you needed support directly from us, then it certainly wasn't because of us or the new support policy that you didn't get it. You could have emailed/phoned us at any time and received prompt support. I'm not exactly sure where this idea that the change in the support policy was to our financial benefit. It isn't. In fact, it's a money loser compared to the old way, primarily because the support sessions never expire. Previously, you would have to stay current with a support plan to keep getting support year after year. We grandfathered existing customers with thousands and thousands of dollars worth of support. << By his own admission, Tim has not been focusing on EDB, and that has been apparent to me for some time, so when my support last came up for renewal, I decided I'd had enough and would renew when it was to my benefit to do so (i.e I no longer have that good feeling about supporting another developer in this case). The Delphi tools market has been a shadow of its former self for many years now, and DBISAM and ElevateDB just don't pay the bills by themselves anymore. I certainly didn't choose to develop and manage 3 products concurrently because it's fun. It's how we're surviving and trying to grow the business. What it *does* mean, however, is that there will be certain years when EDB is the primary focus, and other years when EWB will be the primary focus. EDB is pretty mature in its current incarnation, which is why EDB 3 was put off while EWB 2 was completed. There's just not a whole lot more that I can do with EDB in its current form, other than what I've noted that I've got planned, and its important to keep the disruptions to a minimum because it is important that it remain stable and reliable for existing customers with deployed applications. You're free to do what you want in terms of your subscription, and we've always said that. However, as I said in my post/email, these subscriptions are how we finance the company. Eduardo | Tim,
I wonder how long is going to take for the XE8 support be delivered. My current subscription expires this month and I wanted to get XE8 support before that. I will have a few months without subscription cover due the many expenses on upgradings and the Dolar exchange that is extremelly not favorable to me right now (everything turns 3x expensive) Thanks |
