Thread edbsrvr as service: no tray icon

Heiko Knuettel

Hi,

I just tried to install edbsrvr.exe as a service on a Windows 7 machine, started the service, and got no tray icon, so can not access the user interface. Same with Windows 8. When starting the exe without installing it as a service, it works.

On Windows XP/Server 2003 edbsrvr works fine as a service.

Heiko,

When installing the EDB server as a service, there is no icon in the system tray. So you lose the interface to the server (at least I don't know of any way of accessing it).

This is a limitation in Windows Vista and above - MS really doesn't want
services interacting with the desktop anymore for security reasons.

Heiko,

One more thing. You can access the information that is normally displayed in the GUI Server Window (non-service version) by accessing the Configuration database.

example:

select * from configuration.serversessions;

shows you the connected sessions.

For more info see page 4.2 of the edb2sql.pdf manual.

I suppose Tim could have written the GUI server window to optionally allow access to an existing EDB server that is running as a service, instead of only allowing it to start a new server instance. That way you could see what is going on with the server service without having to write your own program to do it.

Heiko,

in addition to the answers you already got:

You can use a remote session in EDB manager to control the sessions on
the server e.g.:

Just right click "Manage Server Sessions" in the context menu of the
remote session or use the task panel.

There will be an EWB front-end to the server soon that will allow you to use
a web browser to log in/work with the EDB Server.  It's been put on the
back-burner for a while, and I'm now getting some free time to work on it.

Reviving an ancient thread ...   Did this EWB front-end to the EDB Server become available?

Cheers

I got half-done with it, and then I stopped due to EWB 2.x being in the pipeline.  I'm revisiting the EDB queue this week, and am going to start prioritizing the must-have items by the end of 2015, and this is going to be one of the items on the list.

It's a new minor release, which is (was) the hold-up.  Builds are quick and easy (less so for EDB), but minor releases are much more involved with documentation changes, etc.  The problem occurs when the normally easy builds run into a RAD Studio update, which then makes them take longer because I need to do update the database information, builds, new tutorial screen shots, etc.  That's what happened with EWB 2.01 B3, which became 2.02.
