I can't see anything in there that might stop the exception showing so I'll have to fall back on compile with debug dcus and see what happens.

Give me a day, and I'll try out the exact code that you posted and see what I can find out.  I suspect that somehow the global application exception handler isn't set up at that point, and so you don't see a message dialog with the exact exception.  However, I *would* expect that you would see a run-time error message dialog instead.
