Thread File share mode

Is file share mode safe to use with EDB?  Are the issues with Windows not really locking
files (oplocks? etc.) solved?  I remember this being a big problem with btree filer.
There were some registry settings that seemed to help.  Do these problems exist with EDB?

What is the max recommended users with file share mode?

Thanks,
Rob

Rob,

Yes, it's at least as safe as any other app using file sharing.

EDB uses OS locking, and as far as I know it works very well.
Windows had many problems with locks (opportunistic locking not working
correctly, network redirector bugs, etc..) but these were windows
problems, not EDB or DBISAM problems.
So, the answer to your question is in what windows version and service
pack you are using, because EDB locking stuff had always worked
correctly Smiley

That depends on many factors...
If there are many users reading and only a few updating the database, if
on the contrary almost all users insert records frequently, what type of
updates they normally do, the size of the database, the type of network
connection, etc..
Personally, I don't use FS when there are more than 3 users if all of
them can update the database frequently. However, if only 1 or 2 users
write to the DB and all the other only read it, I usually extend this
limit to 5; for more than this I always use Clint/Server.
Note, once again, this is only based on my own experience, and is valid
only for my applications/users. I heard about some cases where FS is
used with success with 20, 30, 50 or even more users...

"Harry de Boer"
To add to this: if you want to use FS mode and choose a middleware solution
(kbmmw / remobjects, etc.) to 'sit' between apps and db you can handle lots
of users. We have an app were hundreds of users (editing) use a dbisam db. I
believe that with EDB this will work the same.

Can you tell me which versions of Windows do not have the locking problems?

QuickAndDirty
I think the procedure is to ask Administrator where problems oocur with virus-scanners,
lockings, etc. If they want to solve the problem like define scanning exclusions, stop
windows oplocks, replace the file server of ano tuk   or  if you should install the SQL
server and work on save TCP/IP.

EDB works the same way as DBISAM in this respect, so everything that applies
to DBISAM also applies to EDB.

We normally don't recommend using more than 10-15, but sometimes people
really stretch that number if it's mostly reading and not a lot of writing.

Rob,

No. I can only tell you about my own experience, and what I can say
about this is that I had many problems with Win 95 and NT4 and
occasional problems with Win 2K and Win98. At the moment, all my current
costumers use Win Xp with at least SP1 and/or Win Server 2003 and I have
no locking problems at all. Note, however that I only use FS when the
number of users is really small, as I said.
