Rita,

<< Tell me do you get pestered by double glazing sales people or pitza
leaflets or somebody trying to get you to buy power from another supplier. ?
>>

Hah, my favorite is when they call from overseas asking you to switch power
companies.  Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't make me feel very comfortable
when a power company does not use local staff.  It makes me wonder how much
of a local presence they even have.  When the power goes out, I don't want
my power company having to rely on some other third party for fixing the
issue.

20 years ago we had a guy on tv always trying to sell double glazing.
Ted Moult his name was he dropped a feather while they switched a fan
on the otherside. The feather just fell to the floor = no draft.
The same company is running an add now re-visiting the old house 20
years later what do they do only a fresh install if I buy DG I expect it
to last long after I go Wink

No.  But I do know what you mean - In NZ we had the junk mail problem,
but not the double glazier.

In fact here it is the other way round - the local traders hide their
lights under a bushell - and it is hard to find the bushell sometimes!
e.g.  if I want to buy glass for windows, I go to Cook Islands Steel,
if I want eis (garlands of flowers for head or neck), I go to the book
shop,  DVD's in two clothing shops...

No pizza leaflets - no letter boxes (mail Boxes), no street numbers to
put on the box anyway, or mail delivery!

Only one power company - gloriously named "Te Aponga Uira o
Tumu-Te-Varovaro" - very expensive power from generators running on
imported diesel.

But we do have VAT and it is VAT day today Frown

You need to get some of those handy solar panels.  You *do* get a lot of sun
there, don't you ? Wink

Yep plenty of sun and we have solar for water heating.  Electricity for
cooking, lights, fridges, water pumping etc. is a bit harder.  Solar
panel=>Battery=>AC Current is not cheap to implement.

One of the banks has opened a "solar branch" on Aitutaki where
everything runs on solar.  But that' not so hard as all they need to
run is a few lights, fans and computers during the day - it is a bit
different if you need 24 hour service for everything the Western
tourist expects.

The good old VAT man he followed Captain Cook, any links to you ?

I thought Scotland could be remote, lovely place tho but no cash machines
or petrol garages. Glasgow and other large places catered for my city girl
needs
but it was hell in the country, we even carried a 5 gallon can of fuel plus
filled up
every chance we got after running dry on Loch Lomand. That was early 80's
my brother moved to Aberdeen 2 years ago he reckons its all ok now even have
cash machines in tiny places. I really fancy one of your holiday spots but
the
lump in the lazeeboy chair hates that stuff ever since we did Panama Canal
on
a cargo ship both ways and the African west coast on another trip.

Yeah, that's a bit of an issue.  I was assuming that your local grid could
accept reverse feeds during the day and only require the diesel power at
night, but that may not be the case.

We only have two "qualified" motor mechanics working on the island,
don't know about how many real electricians - so I think we are talking
about something a bit too fancy at the moment!

You should tell the lump in the lazeeboy to get a life.

Even people on the island ask me if I'm related to the intrepid Captain
James.  Truth is James didn't discover the islands (the polynesians
did!) and they were named after him by the Russians!  He did swish by
one island at some stage though.

Cook is an "occupation" surname and there are millions of the b*gg*rs
all over the world mostly unrelated ... so possibly related but never
researched.

I did some research into my married name, turns out it came
from a bunch of robbers in the midland's England.
They got tax collectors status by some shrewed King and had
their own town called Tipton. The story goes on to say that
they moved to the states around early 1700's and moved west
opening little settlements also named Tipton. I have found 3 so
far but some probaly got swept away. I guess the whole tribe
moved over there as the name is common in the states.
