"Eduardo [HPro]"
I have decided to put this in a new thread just to expose my opinion.

1) I have around 100 applications built with DBISAM
2) Standards were made to bring the things easier and portable
3) Standards were made to be followed
4) Standards are not perfect
5) AFAIK, ElevateDB is not a DBISAM 5 replacement, it is a completelly
different and modern product.
6) A long time ago I suggested to everyone who wants to change the regular
behavior of DBISAM and/or ElevateDB to build your own way of develoment
(like myself) creating xTable and xQuery components. In this way, I can easy
work with or without nulls.
7) ElevateDB (and DBISAM) was not made to serve just one developer
8) Sometimes, I have realized some people in these NG ask for personal
features, just to bring the things easier. I came for CA-Clipper and in that
time the things were so different.
9) Let´s use the ElevateDB features like they are, suggestions is good my
sometimes it will drive the product to a wrong way.

Regards

Eduardo

I am very cynical

>2) Standards were made to bring the things easier and portable

So why are there generally so many different ones for any given thing? And why do most vendors then have extensions which destroy the portability?

Plus I'm only interested in porting DBISAM -> ElevateDB and I'd like that to be as easy as possible. Note I said I. Many people may well be interested in porting from SQL Server/Oracle -> ElevateDB but I'm not one of them.

>3) Standards were made to be followed

First pick your standard Smiley

>4) Standards are not perfect

Accepted <vbg>

>5) AFAIK, ElevateDB is not a DBISAM 5 replacement, it is a completelly

I accept that, but it did start out as the new DBISAM, just that Tim got carried away Smiley

If you have can you post that code to the extensions ng to help out others?

>7) ElevateDB (and DBISAM) was not made to serve just one developer

Agreed.

I remember dBase II, III, IV and Clipper

Well, unless I want to buy the source code and start modifying that I, and others who buy the standard version, don't have much choice Smiley

I reserve the right to respect my opinion above all others, and shout, scream and stamp my feet in a temper tantrum any time I don't get my own way.

Like yourself I am just exposing my opinion.
I can send you my components (the source) without any problems but there are
many other things related with my software.

But if you see the source code you will realize what the power of
inheritance brings to you.

Thank you, I'd like that, but, if possible, it would be better in the extensions ng so others can learn, if not I'd love to see it - my email address is in these posts in clear.

Yours or Tims?

Already know, in a generic way, and have subclassed a few things but I try and leave 3rd party stuff alone. Its difficult enough getting support from some vendors without adding an extra layer of complexity Frown
