How fast is "Quite Fast" for backup |

Yes, you can do hot backups with EDB, especially with 2.0 and the SAVE UPDATES/LOAD UPDATES functionality. However, the SAVE UPDATES still has to do some locking during its operation, but the time frame is much, much less because the only thing that is being saved is the difference in updates between the last time the SAVE UPDATES was executed and now.
