"slightly hard to make out the underline" = I can see the individual screen pixels but not the underline (ie the shift - and not the - on the number pad) at all.

But a bit more experimentation - turn italic off for comments and the underline reappears - eureka!

Ahh, I thought you were talking about italics *separate* from the
highlighting.  I'll check this out and see what I can do.
