I spent some time testing an application for a client last night with
the hopes of rolling out the third attempt to go-live today.  Alas, I
was getting crashes, or rather lock-ups, with EDB 2.01 b5 running on my
Windows 2008 server as a service.  It locked up so hard that I had to
actually uninstall the service and resinstall because simply stopping
and restarting did not work.

I didn't have time to finish testing before I had to leave (and cancel
the go-live with the customer, of course), but I think it had to do
with loading updates.  There is a scheduled job that runs every hour
that loads updates from remote stores.  It had run the first hour after
upgrading, but not the second.  There were also some meta-data changes
to the tables (deleted one on the server, started publishing a new one
from the clients) and so I simply deleted all pending updates and will
start over from a new backup.

It was unsettling, but I didn't post a message (although I had one
typed up) because I haven't had time to narrow down the source of the
problem yet.  However, since someone else has mentioned a problem, I
thought I'd chime in with my experience as well.

I did not try running the server as an application.

While we have none in production we have tested it in office and it seems
works ok here.

Some (possibly) useful setup notes :
- EDB 2.01 b5
- 32bit Windows Server 2008 (have not tried 64bit)
- Used the GUI version of server installed as service (edbsrvr.exe -install)
- the server itself, config DB and databases are all in own folder on root
of C: (don't like using program files in Vista/Server 2008). So in our case
the server is in c:\edb, config also in c:\edb and our database in c:\edb\db
- start server in GUI mode and change the temp table path to c:\edb\temp (it
defaults to user folder which is not desirable)
- (optionally) enable server logging
- manually add edbsrvr.exe to the firewall exception list (or add port tcp
12010)
- close gui and start service (we also configured the service recovery to
restart service should it crash but it has not according to windows event
logs )

Server is  accessible from LAN and has been running ok for a while (only
doing basic data operations at this point - no jobs, stores or replicaton).

I could not get it to install. Let alone run.

v2.01b4  (I believe I tried on earlier version b3)
Windows Server 2008 (32 bit)

Just get an exception and it does not install.

Some sort of wacky permissions thing...though I think I am admin on this machine.

Definitely did not have this problem. Have you tried b5 (just as a test).

Do you have the services admin utility (or server manager) open when trying
to install service ?  These sometimes cause problems adding/removing
services.

What is the folder for edbsrvr.exe ?

Are you using a local console login or terminal services session (though
that should not matter for W2008).

Any other AntiVirus/AntiSpyware type software that might prevent service
install ?

Is server in domain - any chance group policy lockdown in effect ?

When you run regedit do you have the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EDBSRVR key ? if so and
you have no service in service admin then i would delete key from registry,
reboot and try installing it again.

Ok - i was able to duplicate your problem by running under non-admin
account. Exception generated and no service.

Under administrator all is OK so i think your account is not really an
admin.

I was running 2.1 b4 on Win server 2008 64-bit.  I had an earlier
version running on Win Server 2003 32-bit.

Version 2.01 b5 has been running all day today fine--after my problems
last night and this morning.  I'm pretty sure it had something to do
with loading updates for a table that was deleted on the server.
