So far as I know, Synapse is tcp not serial.
I am now using Asynch Pro and it works fine .. but it makes an
assumption that the data is an AnsiString and I believe this will
need to be addressed fairly soon.  The component I used previously
also made the same assumption.

Not at all.  I like that people can talk about Delphi issues in general
