Just wondering what the resulting file format is when using BACKUP DATABASE?

Is it a standard ZIP or RAR file for example, or is it a proprietary format?

It's proprietary, but it uses ZLib for the compression.

There is some code in the edblocal.pas unit that shows you how to read the
backups, if you're interested.
