Thread EDB Server on XP?
Tue, Mar 24 2009 6:44 PMPermanent Link

"David Cornelius"
I've been running the EDB 2 server database for my client from my home
office on Windows 2008 Server for quite some time.  They're finally
getting their own computer setup to host the database in their own
office, but I was frightened to hear they're just pulling an old
Windows XP machine out of the closet and upgrading the memory to 1 GB
(the max on that machine!).

I know better than to ask if this is a good idea--I know it isn't, but
will this even run?  OK, EDB is a very low-footprint database and this
isn't a large or high volume application, but will they have problems
with this?

Here's a short overview of the usage:  21 tables, most with only a few
hundred rows, a few with 40,000+.  Four users, 2 in the local office, 2
remote.  Used to keep track of POs, invoices, contacts, and such.

So low usage and low requirements. But still, an old XP?  It makes me
worried.

My test server is a single-core Pentium about 5-6 years old, with XP and
512MB (of which 32MB goes to motherboard graphics).  The main table has
over 100,000 rows.  I can only test it with 2 connections (myself on
another computer, plus a friend connecting through Hamachi), but so far
the response times have been perfectly acceptable.  Most of the activity
is reading, not writing.  I worry about writing suboptimal code that
will bite me after the application is sent out to customers, but EDB
doesn't seem to be too demanding of server hardware.

(I would like to hear from others who have experimented with turning off
write-caching--is it a big hit on performance for a database where a
lot of old data is being updated, as well as new rows being added?)

My bet is it will be fine. I've run bigger than that with DBISAM and a knackered W98 PC. Responses got a bit slow occasionally but it was fine.

Thanks to both Charles and Roy for your comments.

I did some testing on an old XP last night and it certainly works,
albeit somewhat slower.  I guess I'll have to allow it!  Wink

Just make sure your sales / licence agreement has a section covering app speed and state its only guaranteed if the hardware spec is .... and the number of users is less than .....

Guys with low overheads like that can also have a web site
and his EDB on VPS example price below.
