Are you sure that it isn't fired during any repaint ?

Pretty positive, but with code never absolutely certain. I tried Update and Refresh and the OnGetCellColor event didn't fire.

I'll have to double-check, but those may not trigger a repaint unless part
of the control's canvas has been invalidated/changed.

Unless you particularly want to delve into it its not worth wasting your time on. I have a solution which works and that's good enough for this bit of the app.
