Hi

I want to create a server app in Delphi, but I don't have a dedicated server.  Where is a good place to host
it that is not too expensive.  I am just starting out, so I don't want to spend to much money.

Thanks

Hi Godfrey,

I use these people:

http://www.webhosting.uk.com/windows-vps-hosting.php

starts from £14.50 a month and all works fine for me.

I should point out that £14.50 is for the first month so you can try it,
it is £29 a month after that.

If you've never used Amazon AWS EC2 then check out their free tier :

https://aws.amazon.com/free/

You basically get a first year free as a new customer - it's not a very
powerful server (Micro instance) but should be more than enough for
basic EWB hosting.

Have a look at Amazone and Azure virtual machines. An Azure micro-server costs
about £15/month, with a standard server at about £50/month. I just put my
RemObjects service on the latter type, and it may be possible to move between them.
The key benefit is that you are essentially running a virtual machine, so never
have to worry about the hardware failing, or backups. You can try it free too, but
the thing to be aware of is that when you switch from free to paid, they wipe
everything (at least they do with the ASP.NET cloud services). Apart from that
we've been happy on Azure.

Note that the free year starts when you use anything. I signed up for DNS about a
year ago (approx 12p/month!) and just got a "your free services are now ended"
email. I'd never even thought about trying the rest. But then I don't like the long
intro trials as you might get a surprise later.

True but new customer is i believe identified by credit card and email
so if you have more then one of each ...

That would be fine for playing with things, but for a server used by customers you
need certainty. Most important to me is that I don't want to have a business model
based on a years free service, then build up paying customers, and then have the
servers cost me more than the customers are paying. Now, I know that the free tier
doesn't give you much so this is not likely, but I'm just saying... On the other
hand, I would certainly recommend using the free time to know what the various
options are.
