Why Application.Desktop.ShowMessage() instead of ShowMessage()?

This is kind of weird for me since I had to create a procedure called ShowMessage() to call Application.Desktop.ShowMessage().
The question is why so verbose natively?

These methods need access to protected methods of the TDesktop component.
