Thread Shop testing - last chance

If anyone would like to have a run around my WebBuilder-developed web
shop, this is probably your last chance. I'd appreciate comments on
anything you think could be improved too.


I'll be deleting all data next Monday, but in the meantime you can use
the test credit card shown at the bottom of the window to "purchase"
products. When the "very ugly" not properly fitting sub-screen of
numbers appears, click Submit to complete the order.

Hi Matthew.

Looks good. Performs well too considering the system I'm running on.
Good job.

I looked at the site using Firefox ESR 24.6.0 running in a Win7 VM on a
Linux platform (not particularly fast). I also did not sign-in to the
site so all observations are of someone doing stuff without actually
purchasing.

Couple of aesthetic things ...

1. The pointer did not change to a hand when moving over the two links
below the "How to shop" on the left. They looked like links but no
indication until I clicked on them.

2. The three selectable items in the body of the page may look better if
they were just free-floating without the boxing lines around them. Maybe
horizontal lines between them would be sufficient.

Some issues I encountered ...

1. I added an item to the cart and then clicked the Checkout button.
This displayed the sign-in page. I clicked the "Shop online" menu item
at the top of the page and instead of taking me immediately back to the
list of available items it briefly flashes the checkout page and then
after about a second or so takes me back to the sign-in page. Clicking
"Shop online" again takes me back to the available items.

2. If I enter data into the sign-in page (email, password, etc.) but
then navigate to another page the information I entered appears to be
retained. Navigating back to the sign-in page shows it still there.
Might be nice to blank out all fields from the sign-in page if the user
navigates away.

3. At least once I got an error box popping up saying "Script error in
line 0" but I can't seem to reproduce it. It happened after clicking
various things on the page. May just have been a temporary browser
problem. The system I'm using is not particularly performant.

Thanks - the cursor is because I used labels - I couldn't see much
difference between them, but have now replaced them. Sure, I could set
the label cursor too, but there may be other behaviours. The lines are
a style thing, and may be improved in the next EWB, but I'm sort of
happy with them.

The issues are interesting, and I can see one script error is
occurring. The blanking of fields is interesting, because I sort of
hate pages that blank info for no real purpose. They are lost when you
navigate away, unless you select to keep them. The credit card info is
wiped at points so it isn't left around.

I shall be as rotten as possible in my comments Smiley

1. I'd move the checkout information over to the right - English readers will move eyeballs left to right  so rather than using your products as the focus point the checkout info is where reading starts. I like the little sidebar apart from that.

2. Shipping cost information - like it but if someone clicks here for full shipping information I think you should close the popup so that when they return to the buying page that's not in their way.

3. Full secure web shopping - should that be there at all? Why raise concerns if you don't need to?

4. I'm guessing this is aimed at business customers - if EU rather than rest of world I'd show the ex VAT price in the shopping cart summary

5. I tried clicking the Add to cart button several times for Ovalmap pads - it added each one as a separate line rather than combining them - no big deal just that I'd add them together and show a quantity of 3 rather than 3 separate lines, I might also be tempted, if feeling generous, to convert to the 50 pack if someone added 5 by clicking the button, or eben typed 5 into the quantity box.

6. When I did the above clicks on the Add to cart button were sometimes missed

7. Logout doesn't seem to do anything

8. I didn't get to paying cos it never sent me an email to allow me to sign up

9. I did manage to get stuck on the customer signin page - the back button didn't work, however, using history then the forward button "returned" me to a page with the checkout side bar but nothing else. Clicking shop online eventually took me to the back I was hoping for.

10. I'd put the How to shop info at the top of the sidebar so that it doesn't drift out of sight.

Thanks, some food for thought there. The clicks might be being missed
due to the delay I add to stop double clicks confusing people. We
already have people who order two of something by mistake, and we can
correct it in the current manual process. Not so with this, so I
stopped the double-click.

Logout only really works if you are logged in, which you can't be if
you didn't get the email. I know someone used a "made up" email, so
they bounced, but real addresses should get through.

Thanks for the feedback, I shall ponder some for a while. The "how to
shop" does disappear, but I figure if you managed to add loads to the
cart, you worked it out... I may be wrong to assume that.

The link arrived. As with a lot of sites it takes to long.

Also a lot of sites have this process but I fail to understand why. Its almost as if you don't want to take my money. I don't think that with your products its a problem but with impulse buys I generally give up - I'm not leaving my browser open on a sales site for several hours.

A plus point - your site remembered my order so when I clicked to validate and then said I'd closed the browser it brought up the order. A negative is that because of the delays involved when I click checkout I have to log in again.

Nice to see UK top of the selection list.

If its UK why not have the postcode next and do a lookup to save people typing the details in, and it stops mistakes (or general messing around)

Thank you for not making a phone number mandatory (is there an STD code of 01999?)

Software users name has (complete address details p - can't read the rest and it doesn't look appropriate.

Click on the Pay button I get a message - Please complete the details - no idea what - eventually spotted the CVV was invalid  - changed from 159 to 789 and it worked. The indicator that a bit has been wrongly filled in needs to stand out some more.

It then chunters away to itself - major plus points for letting us know something's happening. Some sites don't even give a wait indicator

I then get transaction failed cos you don't exist (I assume you are banaxiaportal). OK I can understand that but it would be nice to have some indication as to what to do next rather than just stare at the screen going whhhaaat?

Then being a silly bugger I click on the email validation link again. Up came the validation screen, I clicked validate and get a message about email and code combination not recognised. I suggest that you check and if the email address has already been validated then display a message to that effect and do not show the validation screen. I'm also not sure why the button is there. The fact that someone has followed the link should be sufficient indication that they want to validate their email. Just do it, let them know you have then move on.

Doing the above really seems to mess things up. The order is remembered and if I click on Orders and Downloads I get the order I've just paid for. If I then click on checkout I go back to the validation page I've just left

There you go. That should teach you not to ask for people to look at your sales site <vbg>

Much of what I've written is personal taste / approach so feel free to ignore. Overall it works as well as many sales sites and better than some I've seen.

A lot to comment on!

Yes, I don't like the speed the server takes to send the email. On my
test system it is there in seconds. Will look at that again. But we
decided that we wanted to have a validated email address before you can
have the install code.

Not sure how easy postcode lookups would really be - is the database
free now?

Any three digits should be good in the test system.

Aaargh! I changed the wrong thing recently. Now fixed. Please retry all
orders! I was wondering why no one had managed to complete one.

Validation is "inert", or should be, so I'll look at that.
