Thread Setting up web server

Dear All,

Sorry for this basic post.

I have a web-server with a DBISAM DB on it. The site is run via an Intraweb ISAPI.dll &
works fine. The dll uses DBISAM in local-file mode, and seems to run fine.

My users add content on a DBISAM-C/S Delphi 2007 Win32 app in their office & periodically
transfer files up to the server. This also works fine!

... a new customer wants something similar, but has no central office, rather 3 distinct
work-places.

I am considering running DBISAM C/S on the web-server & connecting to it from the 3 sites.

I know my sites IP address. I can transfer the DBSVR.exe + ini files up & call "execute"
to run it.

- Would this actually set the DBSRVR running?
- Should I tell my Web-Provider I am running DBISAM?
- If I then run the DBAdmin utility from my home machine, with the correct setting for IP
address will I be able to manage the DBSRVR directly from "home".
- Are there any special things such as particular ports that should be used etc.?

... if there is an Elevate help page on all this I can just view??

Thanks in advance for any information.

Adam,

Not entirely.  You'll need to ask your web provider if they can open up
ports 12005/12006 on the server machine/firewall so that it can accept
connections on these ports.  Your web provider may simply say "no".

"home". >>

Yes, provided that your web provider agrees to open the necessary ports.

Hum,

I seem a bit stuck. I am writing an Intraweb application, which requires a web-provider
willing to deal with ISAPI applications ... this has already limited the number of
providers I can go to, though I have found one that seems excellent (so far) www.TDMWeb.com

However, they are not willing to open port 12005, 12006 on their shared servers. I would
have to rent a dedicated server for lots of money in order to be able to us DBISAM (with
them).

Does anyone know of a provider willing to deal with ISAPI _and_ DBISAM DBSRVR ??

The usual way around no admin access is to write web tools to do it. This
can be as simple as submitting a form with SQL in it, but with obvious
security provisions to stop anyone doing so. Opening a port is just
dangerous on a web server.

Look into a VPS (Virtual Private Server).  I'm running a Windows VPS at
http://bottomlinecom.net/ and I have full access to the system via RDP and I
can install anything I want, including a DBISAM server.  If you search for
VPS hosting, you should find quite a few options at relatively inexpensive
prices.

Is your ATREX site hosted by bottomline?
