Thread UNC or local Database Directory path.

David

I have a few databases setup on a C/S Database server, all the DB files are located on the same server.

I have noticed that I seem to have set this up as a mix of local path and UNC Paths in the server admin utility.  The UNC paths are pointing to the same computer.

I am unsure, but would the UNC paths have to go across the network and therefore be a bit slower than if I had just used a local path as the files are located on the same computer as the database server.

The access *may* end up going through the network redirector (SMB), so it might be worth it to just use direct drive letters/paths.  I would have to do an analysis to find out for sure, though.  Windows may be smart enough to work it all out and bypass SMB.

If I had to place a bet I'd go for Windows being smart enough. Its quite a few years back now but I remember having to jump through a lot of hoops to get the UNC path returned rather than the local path.
