Roy Lambert NLH Associates Team Elevate | I now have my first Vista PC and I must say I can't think of a prettier way to make a PC go slooow.

If you have a decent graphics card, the PC can actually go faster as the
windows have to refresh less, and the fancy stuff is done by the graphics card thus saving the processor work. On a low spec video card, it will indeed slow it down. /Matthew Jones/

Jon Lloyd Duerdoth | But what about important stuff like compiling... I don't play video
games so video is low on my priorities. No idea. This was bought because I bought an ION USB turntable to transfer LP's to digital format. The old W2K server I was going to use was great when stuck in its own little room but was driving me mad where I could hear it. Tesco had some Gateway notebooks going for a reasonable price. Gut feeling is that converting the file into mpg format isn't any faster on this much higher spec pc. Roy Lambert |

That will be unaffected. The key is that when the really fancy Aero
graphics is in use, each app never gets to actually be overlaid with any other app. Thus it never has to repaint when you move another app around, or it is all whizzing about in the selector thingy. Thus the best graphics mode actually reduces the overhead of just redrawing things (and having to pull in code again that was otherwise idle). So it might actually benefit a compile, but I'd not say by much. /Matthew Jones/

I tried years ago with a pre-amp between record deck and PC. I could get a good enough signal through but the software was naff. Audacity which it comes with may not be the best but it seems to work well enough for me. A quick check shows Amazon selling them. Roy Lambert ps remember the RIAA - be very afraid |
