Delphi 2006 and Win 32- is there a point to upgrading to it |

Herb (Kraft) | I am not going to do .net for a while.
My applications are aimed at consumers, and (trust me) Win 32 is going to be the dominant OS for several years if not many. I have faithfully bought every version of Delphi, and as some of you know, had 12 programmers working for me at my last job all on Delphi. I even bought Delphi for net which gave me 0 win 32 support. Is there any reason for me to upgrade? Right now my D7 works just fine. Herb |

Steve Forbes Team Elevate | Hi Herb,
IMO, if you are happy and comfortable using D7 (which is great) stick with it. You would be faced with a slight learning curve getting used to the new IDE (although I quite like it now), and possibly some dollars needed to update 3rd party libraries. BDS2006 has some nice features, but nothing that makes it a must have over D7 for Win32. -- Best regards Steve "Herb (Kraft)" <herb@examprep.us> wrote in message news:17A4405A-CBE5-467E-AF4B-746C4BFF9990@news.elevatesoft.com... >I am not going to do .net for a while. > > My applications are aimed at consumers, and (trust me) Win 32 is going to > be the dominant > OS for several years if not many. > > I have faithfully bought every version of Delphi, and as some of you know, > had 12 > programmers working for me at my last job all on Delphi. > > I even bought Delphi for net which gave me 0 win 32 support. > > Is there any reason for me to upgrade? > > Right now my D7 works just fine. > > Herb > |

I'd go a bit further than Steve. I think the new IDE has the potential to be very nice but its still rather fragile. Maybe SP3 will fix some of the issues but who knows. Some of the "nicer chunks" (eg error insight) the best advice is to turn them off. Other features (eg the embedded designer) seem to have been created by someone who wants you to switch to M$ (at least in my opinion). I bought it because, still being on D6, and having some money at the time, I thought it would be a good idea to get up to date. I'm using it but I'd say its still slowing me down and I'm still finding differences (eg Assigned - as you'll see from a posting here). One thing I would recommend is browsing the borland.public.delphi.ide.general newsgroup and see what other people are saying and experiencing. This lot sounds negative and it is. So many of the features which are meant to help me have so far hindered me. The latest one I've turned off is block completion - that end; kept popping up where I didn't want it and with extra blank lines. The final straw came when I pasted some {} comments in and it popped an extra end; in after it. I'm still persevering, but all the old stuff is staying in D6! Roy Lambert |

Jon Lloyd Duerdoth | I agree with all of the items from Steve & Roy
I'm aiming to use D2006 exclusively over the next month or so but still wonder why I upgraded (from D7). Jon Roy Lambert wrote: > Herb > > > I'd go a bit further than Steve. "Walter Matte" | When I went to the Delphi 2005 Launch ... I kept saying to the presenter...
well I can do those editing tricks with GEXperts or Castillia.... (refactor, comment uncomment...) but I purchased D1, D2, D3, D4, D5, D6, D7, D8 (basically to get D7 Ent) and so I wanted to continue my support so I bought D2005 ... well I never moved into it, kept reading about the problems..... So I went to the Delphi 2006 Launch... I kept saying to the presenter... well I can do those editing tricks with GEXperts or Castillia...... (He remembered me!!! lol) well I couldn't get my heart into purchasing Delphi 2006 with the way they never got 2005 fully off the ground....... plus the dotNet 2 not there... I would have to buy another version soon enough.... I really want to... but I just had to pass, temporarily I hope..... Herb (Kraft) | Thank you for your help.
My instinct would have been to buy it if for no reason than supporting Borland. That is no longer critical. I will stay with D7. Herb |

Steve Forbes Team Elevate | Hi Roy,
> The latest one I've turned off is block completion I actually love block completion, .. it was just a matter of suppressing my inate instinct to start typing as soon as I entered "begin CR+LF" and think about whether the current block contains existing code or not, .. if it does move the cursor to the end of that code and then do your CR+LF .. voila -- Best regards Steve "Roy Lambert" <roy.lambert@skynet.co.uk> wrote in message news:EEC1C5E6-2308-4A1C-B4C2-1567FD9A7425@news.elevatesoft.com... |

Jon Lloyd Duerdoth | I just want to figure out how to indent the "end;"
My style (for whatever reason) is do something begin end; not do something begin end; Jon Steve Forbes wrote: > Hi Roy, > >> The latest one I've turned off is block completion > > I actually love block completion, .. it was just a matter of suppressing my > inate instinct to start typing as soon as I entered "begin CR+LF" and think > about whether the current block contains existing code or not, .. if it does > move the cursor to the end of that code and then do your CR+LF .. voila |

Have you got GExperts installed - I've added this because DelForEx (like many things) isn't to happy with D2006 and GExperts has the same engine. If you have you might be able to alter it so it formats to your taste. Then its just a matter of keep typing and format later. Roy Lambert |

I've been going down and deleting that blank line rather than viewing it as where I go after I've filled in the block. I'll turn it back on and see if I can put a hold on the OCD behaviour.
