Thread Ruby on rails + DBISAM ?
Wed, Jul 12 2006 6:32 AMPermanent Link

Chris Erdal
I'm a little Delphi-centric, and I've only just discovered Ruby on Rails.
It looks like being the next programming language I'm going to adopt
(mostly for fun, but you never know...)

What do you all think about it, and when will DBISAM / ElevateDB have a
direct object-interface to Ruby?

Not knowing Ruby yet (downloaded it this morning), but as long as it
supports ODBC connections you could use the DBISAM ODBC driver.

Chris,

Since ElevateDB is almost pure OO, we expect to port it to various other
environments over time.

good news - and have you had a look at Ruby on Rails yet? It looks too good
to be true...

(so far I've written 5 lines of code in one tutorial and I can already
insert records into a MySQL table of recipes Smile

I've looked at it, but haven't actually tried anything with it yet.

Isn't it a slow interpreted language? I see there is a YARV (byte-code
compiler), but why isn't there a proper Win32 one? Is it targeted only
at web apps...?

I'm sorry, I don't yet have a clue. But there's an interesting discussion
about performance here:

Aw okay. I was ready to get all enticed, to find out it's just another
scripting language!

Pretty much all Ajax code is scripted. Ruby I believe uses Java for the
back end. There are other Ajax products that use PHP or any other
language that can generate XML. The only all-in-one product that I found
that isn't scripted is Morfik which uses compiled Pascal (or Basic or
Java?). It currently only supports Firebird but it can also generated
webapps for Windows or Linux. Whether it ever gets out of beta is
anyone's guess. Check it out at www.morfik.com
