Home scan euro forgery teenagers may face charges A HOME computer and scanner were all a group of teenagers needed to land in the money. They scanned a ?50 note into the PC, then printed copies which were passed in pubs and nightclubs. To add insult to injury, the small screen forgers were all under 18 and shouldn't have been in the bars in the first place. However, the four Kerry teenagers were caught and could now face charges. Thousands of euro in poor quality forged notes circulated in Co Kerry last Christmas and new year. Gardai believe there were at least two, if not three, separate forgery scams and that as much as ?5,000 was successfully laundered by the teenage friends. When one tried to pass a forged ?50 note in a Caherciveen shop in mid-January the store owner called gardai. The teenagers co-operated with detectives, identifying where the counterfeit money was laundered. Only a small number of shops were hit by the teens, whose favourite targets were pubs in Dingle, Kenmare and Killarney. The four Killorglin youngsters liked to operate in darkened premises where the poor quality of the notes could not be easily spotted. They looked older than their years, say gardai who seized a computer and scanner from the home of one. A file is being sent to the DPP but because they are minors the matter will come under the juvenile liaison scheme, a senior garda explained. A separate forgery operation in Tralee passed notes in bars and nightclubs late at night and the possibility of individuals downloading images from an EU Commission website has not been ruled out. |
