Database corruption: can it happen when editing data?

I've read that database corruption can occur if Windows is improperly shutdown
(power outage, etc.) while an app is using DBISAM database:
Can database corruption occur when a record is being edited? Or is it only
when posted data hasn't yet been flushed to disk?
Thanks.
