"Ian Branch" | I have created a'Local' application with the Drive directory structure of..
X:\Application Directory |==>Data Directory. I have the Configuration file in the Application Directory and the Data, naturally enaough, in the Data sub directory. All works fine in Local. OK thinks I, I will now make it C/S, fires up the EDB Server, creates a new Session in EDB Mgr, tells it it is a Remote Session, but no can log in. Ummm, looking, looking, looking, ah ha! The Server is looking in a whiole different drive/directory for the Config Folder. OK, I;ll change the config folder for the Server. Ummmm, looking, looking, looking. Damn, gotta read the manual. Looking, looking, looking. Nope, can't find it. I am also presuming thatthe login to the Server is EDBDefault & Administrator... Ummmm - Help..... Regards & TIA, Ian -- |

"Ian Branch" | Mrs Murphy rides again.
Perhaps not as obvious/documented as it could be.. I discovered that if I 'Stop' the Server I get another Server Task appear, guess what - 'Edit Server Options. And what do i find in there? Everything I needed. Moral - Press every damn button and see what happens... Regards, Ian |

"Lance R" | Yeah..... I've had a few of those snakes.....
I'm giving Tim a lot of rope, to which I know he's not going to "need" based on DBISAM documentation. I know the potential and quality of the previous product.... Its one of the best documented components out there. Compare it against TMS Software documentation. 'Nuf said. I've discovered that whilst the TMS components look nice and have masses of functionality (possibly to much) they are a nightmare because of the documentation. I've just spent about 1 1/2 days fighting with the ramifications and interactions of OnGetEditorType, OnCanEditCell and OnCellClick to allow the use of both their inplace editors and an external form. I'm really looking forward to Tim getting his documentation up to his DBISAM levels cos fighting with two new component sets without good manuals is driving me dottier Roy Lambert |

Tim Young [Elevate Software] Elevate Software, Inc. timyoung@elevatesoft.com | Ian,
<< Moral - Press every damn button and see what happens...>> Keep this man away from medical equipment, especially of the life-sustaining variety. Sorry about the lack of docs in the server and manager. It should be corrected shortly. -- Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |

"Lance R" | Completly agree with TMS. I know I sound like a bad femine hygene product,
but I just don't get that confident feeling using TMS stuff. Many times I get access violations for removing their components off of forms. Documentation is horrid or non-existent. For ANY component developer that plans to market their stuff, I would heartily recommend researching Tim's docs with DBISAM and then spend time looking at TMS. Documentation is horrid or non-existent. ditto. and if you question anythng too adamantly, you might get a "you are the only customer who doesn't get it" response. My subscription just expired and I did not understand how the subscription process worked. When I questioned it, rather then get a reply that would make me feel they wanted my business, I was curtly slammed for not understanding how it worked. When the stuff works it is beautiful and there is a wealth of components.. but as you said, the docs suck and I have never had so many AV's and "Out of Memroy" errors before using the TMS stuff. Maybe they just have too big a catalog for the number of devleopers who can keep it up to snuff. But... it is still compelling, and just when I thought I could get out..... it pulls me back in. -- David Farrell-Garcia Whidbey Island Software, LLC |

David | I'll wade in with my opinion of TMS and their products.
I've been using TMS products for over 5 or 6 years and I can't remember a time where I have had an AV or any type of stability problem with their software. As a matter of fact, I am so impressed with TMS' stuff that I am currently in the process of converting any use of Raize components to TMS. To be fair, I am only using the TMS Component pack and CE Tools. It is true that their documentation is a bit lacking but I have been able to figure most things out by use of their sample applications. TMS components, in my opinion of course, is an absolute bargain and it seems every week they are adding more functionality along with more components with no additional cost. |
