Ole,

<< Tim, albeit defensive in many situations, has IMO done a quality-job with
EDB. >>

I almost forgot - thanks for the kind words.  However, I still think that
you should stick around and see this through to its logical end, which is me
getting to sit around and actually have nothing to do besides argue the
finer points of the SQL standard with you. Smiley

Tim,

<< C'mon, I won't have anything to do if you stop now. Smiley  Besides, I'm
sure there is more that needs correcting. >>

I'll be around, but not as active as I've been lately.

We're moving into a new home, a down-town apartment in Drammen (40
kilometers west of Oslo), in 6-7 months time from now. This move takes a lot
of attention Smiley such as following up on the construction of our new
apartment, selling our old house, getting rid of all the garbage we've
collected through the last 20 years Smiley and preparing the physical move.

Besides, the golf courses has just opened here now Smile

<sigh>, our local golf course *has* opened, but the golf courses around here
*have* opened.

The appreciation of your work is well deserved.

Frankly, I enjoy professional SQL discussions, mainly because the SQL
framework has grown pretty large and the standard documents use a language
that's not particularly easy to digest for us modest mortals. I don't know
many SQL professionals myself, but I've had the pleasure to communicate with
the *master* himself, Mr. Jim Melton (the editor of the SQL standard
documents since SQL-92), in private e-mails.

One thing to be aware of - the SQL language/framework has been developed,
improved and debugged through 3 decades now, which means it's a very mature
programming framework. Despite the "legal"-style of language used in the
standard documents, which can be hard to understand at first, the
specifications and rules are well thought out. That's why proprietary vendor
extensions easily break the framework, just like bugs are introduced in
traditional programming, and therefore should be QAed and tested the same
way.

My advice is to make vendor extensions *optional* whenever possible, such
that SQL statements can be coded the standard way if desirable, and the
vendor extensions may be used at the user/developer will. Some DDL
extensions are by nature specific to the vendor database engine, of course.

However, as I've stressed several times already - I'm *not* after testing
EDB for strict SQL:2003 compliance. What I'm basically trying to communicate
is common, sound industry standard db behavior.

And luckily enough, albeit with some resistence, you're making good progress
