Sharing code idea |

Lucian | Hi all,
I was recently converting to ElevateDB some stored procedures from MS SQL and discovered there are so many little functions that one may need at times. It is really crappy to have to reinvent the wheel over and over and over (and I am talking about reinventing the wheel in various jobs I had for many years now...). So, I decided to publish whatever stored procedures I wrote, hoping and I am inviting folks to publish as much as they can or are allowed to. Of course it is best if we publish only TESTED code that works but than it is of course our job to test anything we grab from the internet and not trust anyone I am about to upload a dozen or two of little stored procs to the binaries forum, but I am thinking it would be better if we have a special designed forum called "public library" or whatever Tim thinks is more appropriate. This way, you won't have to browse the current binaries, instead, a dedicated forum would allow you to choose faster what you need. So, Tim, shall I upload my stuff to binaries or wait for a more appropriate ng? regards Lucian |

I suggest the extensions newsgroup Roy Lambert |

Sure I can do that ... however, my stuff will push down all other messages and some folks might get angry, I don't know. Go take a look and see how it started to look. That's why I suggested a place where someone knows what to expect, a place where you wouldn't ask questions or wait answers... Anyway, I have a bunch more I would upload but still I'm not sure the extension group won't bother someone ? Lucian |

OK I see what you mean. Why not put them all into a single post as a library? Roy Lambert [Team Elevate] ps A lot of the posts in the extensions ng are mine. I don't mind them getting pushed down by other extensions but I do wish people wouldn't post questions in there. |

I thought about that and I for example find it more convenient to lookup something usefull by subject line, than having to search a 2000 lines script.... I'm exagerating now, I won't be uploading probably one tenth of that >A lot of the posts in the extensions ng are mine Yes, and thanks >I do wish people wouldn't post questions in there. Exactly. regards Lucian |

Adam Brett Orixa Systems | I made a similar suggestion when I started trying to write proper procedures for EDB ... the idea of creating a small part of the EDB technical website which could host something simple like a list of user-posted procedures:
title purpose SQL date posted programmer So far Tim has not acted on the idea, but I would also like to have such a facility, especially if user comments (ratings 5 star, 4 star etc.) was possible as this would help us to sort out which ones worked, were useful etc. |

You know, you have no idea how much that would be used. I can't remember how many times I used solutions someone else already found. In fact I keep Xananews only for its nice features like searching and I have a bunch of Microsoft forums (which are discontinued) handy for lots of things. Same with Elevate, Digital Metaphors, Teechart ... a few that I remember I search goodies from time to time. The idea of having to re-write stuff like IsLeapYear .... man kind of stinks so much, that I hated myself for wasting time for it. But what can you do. Anyway, back to the idea, I think the subject line should be pretty obvious of what the thing is about. Than the code I would love that the guy who posted at least tried it and lastly, if not fully commented than at least a few usage samples would be nice. regards Lucian |

Tim Young [Elevate Software] Elevate Software, Inc. timyoung@elevatesoft.com | Lucian,
<< So, Tim, shall I upload my stuff to binaries or wait for a more appropriate ng? >> I would use the Extensions newsgroup, as Roy indicated, for now. I will have something available in the future for posting this type of thing directly on the web site, but like all things at Elevate, it's waiting on EWB to be finished. -- Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |
