If you create a grid in a tab, position it topleft and stretch bottom
right, you cannot create a column because the page control's + is in
the way. I kept looking for a property for the columns...

Also, while there is a big square, only the icon part is active, which
is a pity - it would be better for the whole square of the + to be
clickable.

You're going to have to keep the grid un-stretched until you can create all of the columns that you need, and then set the stretching in the layout properties.
