"Malcolm" | Results of some more trials:
Acronis TI: Image of system disk from within Windows over LAN with quiet workstation and server = 242 minutes! Drive Snapshot (trial version): Same exercise = <11 minutes!!!!!!! I know, I didn't believe it either, but the image checks out OK. I think my 40 Euro may go to the latter. Malcolm |

Jon Lloyd Duerdoth | Malcolm,
This looks very interesting... please keep us informed about your experiences. I do volunteer work for a couple of non-profit agencies that need backup strategies and this program looks like it could help. Roy Lambert NLH Associates Team Elevate | Thanks to all - I've bought Acronis. The speed isn't to bad for what I want - the occasional backup of the c: partition complete with OS. Its a shame that ultimately the only way to test it is to do a restore . That I'll test firstly on a different PC.

That I'll test firstly on a different PC. That's what I did. My 80 GB 5400 rpm notebook drive was simply too slow for daily work and 3 simultaneous VMs, so I replaced it with a 100 GB 7200 model. First I tried Casper, but it needed 10 hours or so - at least that's what it displayed for an hour or so. I cancelled it, used Acronis and finished it in less than an hour. Switched drives (the 100 GB was connected via USB for copying), booted, everything was groovy. Ahem, anybody here giving me $3k? HP brought the Next Big Thing after my nx8220: the nc8430. 15.4" LCD with up to 1680x1050 and 256 MB video RAM, up to 4 GB RAM (for an additional price you can buy 2 simple HP notebooks for), up to 100 GB 7200 rpm drive, DVD-DL Lightscribe writer, fingerprint sensor and on and on and on and on... with about 7 hours on battery using he additional travel battery pack! For me, it's _the_ dream machine. Except the missing DVI connector on that thing, but there is one in the docking station. Ralf |

OK, by then you should be able to knock the "k" off the price, and I MIGHT think about making a donation Roy Lambert |

"Malcolm" | Hi Jon
So far I am pretty happy with Drive Snapshot which I have now tested on all my machines. It is not free, but disaster recovery is worth a little of the hard-earned! I discovered Drive Snapshot while moving from network boot floppies because floppy drives are going out of fashion .. and so are my DOS networking skills. I have switched to using a Windows PE CD to be sure I can boot all my machines complete with networking, a mapped drive to my server, VNC server and a load of utilities even if the HD is completely unbootable. It used to be a bit of a palaver to build a boot CD, but with Bart's PEBuilder it is now a snap and you can include plugins (including Drive Snapshot) to suit your needs. I have included the VNC server in mine because I have one laptop with a dead screen (now used for driving data projectors) which would otherwise be a bit of a challenge to 'repair' when there's no visible output! Now works a treat If you hear no more from me before September (when my trial runs out), you may assume I continue to be a happy bunny. Malcolm |

Jon Lloyd Duerdoth | I just dropped them (him) a line with a question over the weekend
and got a response within a few hours. It looks like it will do what I want. The idea of a remote backup using the psexec program seems to work as well. I just came across "Bart's PE builder" from a link on the Snapshot web site. That looks like a good one too!
