OT: Microsoft Delphi? |

"Omik" | Would anyone here want Microsoft to buy Delphi? Just try for a second to
imagine Microsoft Delphi. I really don't know, but I think MS would be worst company of Delphi even though the have resources swimming in. |

Steve Forbes Team Elevate | Hi Omik,
IMHO Delphi has a shelf life = Win32 development, once that disappears so will Delphi. Heaven help us when we are in the clutches of M$, but I don't see any alternative. -- Best regards Steve "Omik" <kimowaugh@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:31264072-7D6A-4975-9BF4-FB3C83DDD9E9@news.elevatesoft.com... > Would anyone here want Microsoft to buy Delphi? "Rijk van der Merwe" | Hi,
Yes, sadly I agree with Steve, Delphi will disappear with win32. I would like to think 3-5 years max, unless Microsoft can't get people to upgrade to Longhorn or whatever as soon as they like. My instincts tells me, that there's China in our future I'd risk to harass a wild guess, that some of Chinese investors will be participating in purchasing significant shares of whatever become new Delphi company and shift it into targeting Linux back again. This is not so far fetched - Chinese picked up IBM's division a few years ago. That would also be very much in the interests of many European and Eastern European countries/markets and it very much in line with their general movement towards supporting Linux-like OS on governmental level. Nevertheless, as far as US concerned, I will have to agree with you - unless there's a miracle and new DelCo makes sudden improvement in quality and marketing. On another note, Delphi as is will not die, the worst thing that can happen it will become a marginal open source tool but with its current customer base it is very likely that someone will still maintain it for years. I thought Clipper has died, and yet it is still around and the two are not even comparable. Cheers, Michael |

Steve Forbes Team Elevate | Hi Roy,
> OK - why? a. BDS is not that much better than Visual Studio (.NET wise) b. BDS will always lag somewhat behind it in terms of NET support c. VS is a lot cheaper than BDS (Enterprise and Architect flavours) d. ObjectPascal devotees can use Chome I hope I am totally wrong, but in an entirely .NET world I don't think Delphi can complete and remain profitable. > Also how long do you think the shelf life is? Could be 10 years or more (if M$ OS's continue to support native Win32 applications), take DOS for example .. we still have customers running our last DOS release which is more than 10 years old. -- Best regards Steve "Roy Lambert" <roy.lambert@skynet.co.uk> wrote in message news:8A2AAEB7-AC52-4F80-98DE-9FFD1DC6C118@news.elevatesoft.com... > Steve > > > OK - why? Steve Forbes Team Elevate | Hi Mike,
> My instincts tells me, that there's China in our future As long as they don't change the IDE language .. I visited an Internet Cafe when I was in China recently, and you would not believe how hard it was to find my way around the PC ;-P > On another note, Delphi as is will not die Yes I agree, there are too many applications out there written in Delphi .. I was meaning as a current commercial product. -- Best regards Steve "Michael Baytalsky" <mike@contextsoft.com> wrote in message news:F828CD4D-0DDB-412C-A252-D57089AAEF5B@news.elevatesoft.com... |

Jon Lloyd Duerdoth | Steve,
If you're right that will be all I need. I doubt that my brain will handle coding and updates beyond that time... Steve Forbes Team Elevate | Hi Jon,
I reckon I'll still be coding in 10 years, but I'll hopefully be retired and doing it totally for pleasure I've got so many ideas and no where near enough time to follow through -- Best regards Steve "Jon Lloyd Duerdoth" <jld@welshdragoncomputing.ca> wrote in message news:032CBF5A-73FA-43D9-A70B-AE12B6A41D33@news.elevatesoft.com... > Steve, > > If you're right that will be all I need.
