I'm trying to setup a simple newsgroup server for a half dozen folks to
use. Is it possible/easy to limit the users that can login to Tim's
internet server?

<tale of woe on>
this seemingly simple task has been a nightmare.

-got phpbb through my webhost all set up but it now crashes when you try
to register a new user. Waiting on tech support.

-tried snapserver per rita. On the first run it goes into a database
backup mode that never exits. Nonfunctional on restart. Waiting on tech
support.

-tried hampster. The chm help file is broken so no way to even start
trying to set it up.

any other suggestions for a cheap/free newsgroup server?

<tale of woe off>

Jim,

I dabbled with
http://www.twinhelix.com/cgi/forums/

For low traffic and low number of users it might be OK.

Jon, thanks for the link. Unfortunately, it requires setting up and
configuring Apache and PHP first so it could be way more complex than
this endeavor is worth...

Hmmm, that will require modifying the server a bit since it doesn't
currently handle logins or private access.

Jim,

My ISP was already set up that way so for me it was
pretty easy.

I thought that might be the case. Might be something interesting to try
when I find myself with too much time on my hands. Perhaps 2012 or so.

I think that my hosting company has the problems worked out. They have
been remarkably quick and efficient and effective at helping me. If not,
that will be my next try.

Thanks,

Jim:
You might consider Easy File Sharing Web Server http://www.sharing-file.com/
It's easy to setup and manage.  It's not all that secure but if you just want to
share some information/files/photos and a forum dialog for a few folks it works
just fine.

For $50, it will save you hours of time.

Just thinking laterally - why not set up a private Yahoo group?
