Thread Vista deletes? hides? dat files

Hello.

Last month i loose two times the dat files from my application!

Dbisam version is 4.25 Build 3
Delphi version is 7

The application is installed on two different notebooks with Vista. One of them is running
from a USB connected hard disk drive and the other from the HDD inside the computer.

The customer said that the program worked as usual and suddenly appear the message 11010
table or backup file “file name” does not exists.

The program is running for about four years now  from a USB connected hard disk drive
under windows XP without problem like this.

I check the disk for the files with undeleted programs but I found nothing. Any idea?

The tables are not stored anywhere under the Program Files folder are
they? That shouldn't be done anymore under Vista. Otherwise if it
happened on two different machines I would suspect anti-virus software.
Is it just the .DAT missing and .IDX still is there?

Right - for those who are curious, I've written a bit about this here:
http://www.clipboardextender.com/off-topic/vista-program-files-hide-and-seek

Otherwise, I agree, it sounds like an antivirus or antispyware problem.
Let's cross our fingers that it isn't a repeat of the "deleting empty .blb
files" problem.

I've just created a shortcut to the virtualstore on my desktop so I can check every now and then what Vista's doing behind my back

Thomas,

<< I check the disk for the files with undeleted programs but I found

We are not aware of any applications such as anti-spyware, etc. that delete
..dat files unless they are stored in the temporary files directory (such as
temporary tables used by query result sets).  See here for more information:

http://www.elevatesoft.com/bulletin_14.htm

However, just to be sure - is the client running any anti-virus or
anti-spyware software ?  It may be that the software thinks that the USB
stick is trying to infect the machine with a virus.   I know - dumb, but
that's what we've come to expect from the Symantecs of this world. Frown

How does your program obtain the path to the database ? Could it be that
Windows assigned a different drive letter to the USB device this time.
Meaning that it used to be "E" drive but this time when plugged in, it was
assigned "F" by Windows. Hence the program could not find the db at the
usual Drive E .

The two notebooks do not have any kind of antivirus software because they contain valuable
data for the company, and they never connected to internet with these.

•   the program runs from a usb HDD
•   Worked fine on XP pc
•   it is not inside “program files” folder
•   no antivirus program installed
•   not remember if idx files missing too, probably yes.
•   Same problem on two different pc’s

Just to verify - you're sure that the USB hard drive is the one experiencing
the issue ?  And the .dat files are actually gone when you try to verify
their existence ?  Or is the application just saying that it can't find
them, but they're actually still present on the USB HD ?

Windows Vista update 'kills' USB devices
By Kelly Fiveash ? More by this author

As SP1 automatic download goes MIA

Updated Microsoft has admitted it is investigating reports that a
recent Windows Vista security update causes havoc with some USB
devices, but the software giant is yet to provide a fix for the cock-up.

The Windows Vista SP1 pre-requisite KB938371 update was released last
week, but some unfortunate Vista customers have claimed that their USB
mice and keyboards among other devices refuse to work after the update
is installed on their computers.

One reader told The Register that he gave up after several frustrating
attempts to remove the erroneous update.

The company said in a statement today:

"We are aware of concerns that a recent Microsoft update may be causing
problems with USB devices. We are investigating the matter, and at this
time, do not have any information to share."

Yesterday, meanwhile, Microsoft finally pumped out Vista service pack
one (SP1) in the remaining 31 languages available as a manual download
via its Windows Update site.

However, the automatic version of the download remains missing in
action. Redmond had chalked mid-April as the date when SP1 would start
downloading onto computers across the world.

Now Microsoft has been forced to admit that it has once again missed a
crucial service pack deadline.

The true trouble fun will start when computers begin receiving the
automatic SP1 update, so why is Microsoft delaying getting the party
started?

A spokesman at the firm told El Reg: "Microsoft wants to ensure
customers have the best possible experience with Windows Vista,
including installing SP1; this has always been the priority. Until SP1
is automatically distributed via Windows Update, consumers are able to
download SP1 manually using Windows Update."

Elsewhere in Microsoft land, rumours are wildly scurrying through the
interweb suggesting that Windows XP SP3 could throw its anchor
overboard with a release to manufacturers on 21 April followed by a
general release a week later.

That's news that is likely to satisfy plenty of people who have decided
to swerve Microsoft's unloved Vista in favour of soldiering on with XP
until the arrival of Windows 7; the momentous occasion which some,
including BillyG himself, hint could come as early as the second half
of next year. R

Update
Microsoft contacted El Reg late Thursday to point out that the Windows
update currently playing havoc with a number of USB devices was in fact
Vista SP1 pre-requisite, KB938371 and not an update for its spyware
blocker Windows Defender.

Interesting, and a possible avenue of exploration.  One thing, though - try
not to post entire articles here, but instead use a link.  I wouldn't want
to get in trouble for violating someone's copyrights. Smiley
