DBISAM & 64bit |

"Al VAs" | Hi,
I was asked a question about whether there are any issues with DBISAM database engine (V3.30) and 64-bit servers. Has anyone had any ill-effects in this setup? Thanks Alex |

<< I was asked a question about whether there are any issues with DBISAM database engine (V3.30) and 64-bit servers. Has anyone had any ill-effects in this setup? >> We have not had any reports of any issues with such a setup other than some minor installation issues with the ODBC driver. -- Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |

"Chris Thornton" | It seems ok for me. My app runs fine, by all accounts. I've got some issues
with the taskbar (I have a "bar" that docks into the taskbar, and it doesn't work, but neither do any others, including Windows Media Player). But the DBISAM seems to be fine. My database isn't large enough to need 64-bitness though. BTW, I always ask people (who inquire about 64-bit) why they are running Vista64, and as a follow-up, "was it worth it?" I haven't had any satisfactory answers, thus far, and nobody ever answers the (admittedly smart-ass, passive-aggressive) follow-up question. |

"Al VAs" | Thanks for your input. This is a client who is putting in 64-bit servers so
can work with dual processor operating systems I presume. 64-bit Vista? I ask why Vista at all. Maybe thats why I got an AMD 64 bit for 5 quid at a car boot sale I did buy what I think is an almost identical box a couple of years ago with the then new Novel SuuSE 9? 64 bit and it was ok except Kylix didnt run I have just installed the openSuse 10.3 on my bargain 5 quid box and I must say its probaly the best linux distro imo so far. What did I like best ? well ease of installation it grabs the vital info 1st like its ip and group name gateway ip DNS1 DNS2 username and password for your isp then it just strutts its stuff and installs then when its there it asks for your full name username and pword + root pword and its up and running in under 15 minutes. Lazarus 64 bit RPM was not as simple tho a list of issues to resolve. The world is not as ready for 64bit as it was for 32bit but be ready. Rita |

Yes, I've been very pleased with DBISAM, particularly with the small footprint and easy distribution. I've even gotten ClipMate certified for U3 devices, which was made a lot easier with the easy distribution. -- Chris |

People dive in because they like to have the latest and greatest, and figure that 64 is better than 32, because 32 was better than 16. But then none of their stuff works, and they wonder why. IMO, the 32-bit transition was necessary and beneficial for most users. Not so (at the current time) for 64. |

<< I have just installed the openSuse 10.3 on my bargain 5 quid box and I must say its probaly the best linux distro imo so far. >> Yeah, OpenSuse is pretty cool. The interface alone is really nice. Sam saw me tinkering with it a few weeks ago and asked me if we could use it as our desktop OS. -- Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |
