Thread Linked Tables require refresh before data can be accessed.

I'm using MS Access 2007 (confirmed same problem in previous 2 versions) to link to some
DBIsam tables.  Once I link them, I can access them fine.  However, when I close the
database, re-open it, the table are not accessible until I open the Linked Table manager,
select them all, and simply hit ok, which basically refreshes them.   I see this problem
all over the internet with a few fixes.  However, none of them work for me.   Just curious
if you have any ideas, updates to the driver that might help, etc.

I did spend about 3 hours this afternoon researching this issue.  Of that time, I spent
about half on the newsgroups here.  I tell you that just to say if I missed a thread,
please just point me back to that thread.

I have a customer who wants to automatically run macros on opening the database.  They
fail since the tables won't work without refreshing.

What version of the ODBC driver are you using ?

I'll have to install MS Office 2007 first before I can comment further.  I
do know that 2003 works just fine, so more than likely it is an issue with
2007.

We have a customer with a similar problem. He wrote (note: Mailware refers to our app. We are using DBISAM 4 and the ODBC driver for that version):

I have Mailware Client/Server running on Windows 2000 servers.  I have Microsoft Access applications setup to directly access the data tables for my Mailware 2006 and 2007 databases
using the ODBC drivers.

When I start the Ms Access applications, my first attempt to access the data tables always fails.  I get the message:  ODBC—connection to ‘MailwareCSMorrisFlamingo’ failed.  I then click on
OK, then I get the message:  Microsoft Access can’t open the table in Datasheet view.  I then have to create a new link to any data table in the Mailware database (Using File – Get External
Data – Link Tables etc.).  This link will succeed.  All of the established links in the Ms Access application will then also begin to work.  I can then delete the extra link I just created, and
continue to work normally.

The above method works for me using Windows 2000, XP, and Vista to access Mailware 2006 data tables.

It also works for me using Windows 2000 to access Mailware 2007 data tables.  I don’t know if XP works because I don’t have an XP machine to test on.  But it does not work with Vista.

With Vista, when I make my first attempt to access the data tables I don’t get the first message.  Vista goes directly to the 2nd message: Microsoft Access can’t open the table in Datasheet
view.  When I attempt to recover by establishing a new link to a data table, Vista also fails.  It actually gets as far as placing the link in the Access application, but when I try to open the link,
I again get the message: Microsoft Access can’t open the table in Datasheet view.

Clearly I have a fundamental problem with the ODBC drivers.  I have developed a workaround that works for Windows 2000, XP and Vista for Mailware 2006.  It works for Windows 2000
(and probably will work for XP, but I can’t be sure yet) for Mailware 2007.  But I haven’t been able to get it to work for Vista and Mailware 2007 yet.  Unfortunately, I have a Vista machine,
and this is slowing me down big-time.

MS has broken something in Access, but I don't know what yet.  I will try to
get Acces 2007 installed on a machine this week and see what the problem is.
However, even I do manage to figure out what the issue is, there is no
guarantee that I can provide a fix for it, especially if it is anything like
this issue:

Thanks Tim, will take a look.

Also, the customer is reporting that after linking he can read the db, but not write to it. Any idea why?

Not really, no.  I'll have to wait until I can try it here before I can
comment further.  I'm finishing up the EDB release now, and after that I'll
be working on getting the next DBISAM build out.  I'll then take a look at
this issue with Access 2007 and see if I can find out a solution before the
new build is released.

Wondering if anything more has been discussed regarding this older thread on linking tables to Access 2007?  I am having the exact same trouble.  At times, even a refresh will not work, I have to actually recreate the data source before I can go into Access and see the data.  While I can get around this for now, it will not be a workable solution for my client.

I am using DBISAM 4 ODBC Driver, 4.26.00.03

I just tried linking some tables using Access 2007 and the DBISAM 4.30 ODBC
Driver, and it works fine.  The version of Access 2007 that I'm using is:

Microsoft Office Access 2007 (12.0.6535.5005) SP2 MSO (12.0.6545.5004)

Thank you Tim, I'm confirming that version with my client.  Can you tell me, after linking the tables to Access 2007, are you able to then close Access and reopen it and have the tables automatically refreshed?  This is my problem.  I can link the tables just fine the first time, but they fail upon re-opening the database.

If you do not have this problem, can you please tell me your process for creating the ODBC link?  I am versed in setting these up, but seem to be having trouble configuring this one.

Thank you,

Tim, also wondering if I have the most recent version?  You said 4.3 of the driver, but mine is 4.26.  This came from my client who just ordered it recently.  How would they go about getting the more recent?

Thanks,  Lori
