I'm back on. Because I'm in control of my news&mail client I didn't have to wipe and reload everything just reset the message numbers back a bit so that the new stuff that was using numbers I'd already downloaded were replaced.

Hmm, it does appear to be up and down more times than a wh&*%")

Exactly. Smile

We just have no idea what kind of technology is involved here. It's not
as simple as, say, land someone on the Moon.

More accurately they were up for few days and as of Sept 3 down again.

More interesting question is how will they proceed - move to community
forums (which IMHO just suck) or try to make this work again for a while.

They were up for a while with some reuse of post numbers. Then it went down again. Then I've downloaded a few hundred posts from back in July.

Anyone for Lazarus (or freesparta)?

I have just spotted the blog from Nick Hodges dated 6 Sept.
http://www.nickhodges.com/
If true it makes depressing reading.

I went and had a read, then went and had a look at community.embarcadero.com. If they could put this amount of effort into creating something on-line that pushes almost all of my loath buttons why couldn't they create/maintain a decent NNTP system?

You may guess that I share the depression it caused in you.

I'm not normally into conspiracy theory but I wonder if this "beautiful work" is the reason for the NNTP newsgroups demise rather than a response to it?

To paraphrase Hanlon'z Razor - never attribute to conspiracy that which
is adequately explained by stupidity and incompetence.

(I'm referring to EMBT management here and not forum admins).

Considering how little EMB employees were contributing to NGs i would
not be surprised if management had little idea of their value.

I know personally without NNTP i will simply stop visiting and might end
up there only if searching for a specific problem now (and likely will
use SO first anyways).

The biggest value, to me, was the Delphi Third Party newsgroup, for
finding out about interesting components. Non-Tech was often
interesting for news, but far too often spoiled by the few who would
never accept anyone else disagreeing with something like removing 8-bit
strings. That aspect I won't miss at all - there is only one other
place I (personally) find such behaviour, and most places, like the
Elevate newsgroups, are so much better.
