I am but I'm using Thunderbird which you are using for mail so not very
useful. I did try some other readers few years ago but Thunderbird
always worked best for me.

I recall one called Unison was nice but got discontinued after. You can
also check MacSOUP and Hogwasher.

Been doing this for about 4 years now and works really well for us - i
run workstation product on pc as well and can easily copy the pc images
back and forth.

Now trying that. Seems sensible enough.

In general it is working really well. The biggest issue I have is that
I have to use a Dongle (Deskey DK2) which seems to want to disconnect
every so often. Pain!

Except that it fails completely on the Elevate news server. It
complains the server doesn't support XHDR. I have an iPhone app that I
also use, but it cannot post for some reason. I also have another app
that can't read the messages.

I think we have just shown why HTTP won over other protocols! 8-)

Most USB devices work well (drives, mobile phone etc) but there can be
some weird ones. I have a garmin GPS that i never did get to connect to
VM properly.

If you have not already done so then there are few useful articles
VMware has (some older but might still apply):

Fuision and how to enable USB debugging:
https://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8720

More general ones (most should apply to fusion also):

Quick google indicates this might be a fix for this :

================================
Turn off the option to Retrieve Newsgroups header in your account
settings

Go to your account settings.
menu bar item Setup>Accounts
select the news account name for your account
click the Edit icon
select the options tab
and then
turn off (uncheck) Retrieve Newsgroups Header
================================

Thanks, and that is what it said in the error message, but it does not
seem to relate at all to the software that was in front of me. And I
don't think that the server has such a menu bar, so I gave up after a
good look around.

And so I had another look around at alternatives, and frankly there
isn't anything since about 2009 that has been supported. This is
another area where the market is ripe for taking over - news readers
(iOS too!) and weather monitors. I cannot believe that weather monitor
software requires me to have an application running all the time, on
both Windows and Mac! Really? And if there is an agent or something
reading the data, you have to shut it down to make a change? What
decade is this? I sat down and worked out what I'd have as my UI for a
weather app (in WebBuilder of course, so multi-client), and it is quite
simple. But of course the reason these markets are so poorly served is
because there is no money in them. Not for the shoddy work that is sold
at the moment anyway. I always felt too dirty to buy the one I tried as
a demo, but fortunately the software was so poor that the "timeout"
always reset itself so I never had to. Then I changed the PC at home
from Windows to Mac, and I feel no need to plug the station back in.
And so it is with NNTP I guess. Sigh. Fortunately I have virtualised my
"broken" PC so will be able to continue for a while. Back to work now...

Which reminded me why I got distracted - the dongle doesn't connect
again.

But I thought I'd try Thunderbird - all looking good, until I composed
a reply, and it emailed it... No means to send back to the NNTP server
it seems. Aargh.

Agreed - i very much prefer NNTP over looking at the forums in browser
and Thunderbird is only game in town.

Most of this is simply the interface though - i like to see the
discussions trees etc and easily identify new posts.

Maybe this is alternative web UI (done with EWB) that looks more like
nttp style newsreader view !? One would need web API that provides NNTP
style access to messages.

Have you looked at MeteoBridge
(http://www.meteobridge.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page). It runs off a
small cheap hardware router (tp-link seems to be preferred but others
supported also : http://www.meteobridge.com/wiki/index.php/Hardware).

I'm going to take a crack at this, once I get an EWB TTreeView control done.  We need it for our support forums.
