This was just an extra check that was left in that shouldn't have been. There is no issue with EDB 1.x clients mixing with EDB 2.x servers, and vice-versa. One of the major improvements over DBISAM in the EDB design was to eliminate the need to keep the servers and clients in synch all of the time.
