"Mike Shkolnik" | Michael,
> And I strongly disagree with Mike regarding Russian propaganda. Propaganda is very strong in every country. But my point is that in most exUSSR countries the people haven't the democratic elections. Look in Russia - Putin is appointed by Elzin (please don't say that people elected) and now all electorate wait what say Putin about next "President". Putin will appoint the next person and people will "vote" again. This is the style of USSR - there we had the "elections" too and most people leaved not bad (in economic term) and has the stable future but are you really want to live in USSR again? I personally - NOT! I want to have the choice (or at least to imagine that I have)... All they live as they want and I don't suggest to bomb like in Iraq or Belgrad (personally I sure that this is mistake of White House). All what I say is that situation in these countries is not so good and UN (or any other international organizations) must have the influence there. We all live in small Earth and the freedom of mad neighbour limited by borders of his house. If any his action will disturb another persons, he must be stoped (by legal methods). His freedom limited by freedom of another persons. IMHO the same rule must work for countries. -- With best regards, Mike Shkolnik EMail: mshkolnik@scalabium.com http://www.scalabium.com |

Michael Baytalsky | Mike,
I'd put it a bit differently. The democracy as I understand it is when *the majority* of people chooses whatever they feel best for them and if the majority of people in xUSSR and generally in most russian cultural and russia dominated areas feel that they like to have a strong Czar or Autocrat - I think that that's what they should be able to get. It's very natural for Russia to have Czar (and this has nothing to do with being barbaric, it's just the type of culture, after all limited monarchy could be quite civil). And please don't tell me that Putin doesn't have one of the highest levels of approval! Wasn't he reelected once after he was appointed? Nazarbaev got over 80% votes! Those are real people, who voted. Yes, they're a bit old fashioned and not believe in democracy very much - but that's their life and that's their choice. I think we should learn to live with what we have and accept the reality at hands. When you say they don't have choice, what exactly do you mean? Just compare to what happened in Kirgizstan. Those people do have choice - they can choose order supported by their own internal powers or chaos (contained by US & NATO troops). That's their only choice. It makes no sense voting for a party, who has not real power and will be unable to rule the country. Those of us (myself included) with strong european inclination, must understand that we're the minority here (so far) and we should not delude ourselves that russia (or Uzbekistan!) can or should be a true democracy. It's going to be bad for them, will not cause anything but stagnation and civil disobedience, anarchy, kleptocracy, etc. This is my opinion. The society itself must grow up to be able to comprehend democracy. If you force or impose western type democracy on a traditionalistic culture, you will end up with chaos. Simple people just don't understand what's going on. This is why I oppose very strongly any western interventions into our political and social matters - they don't understand the specifics and what they do (even when they actually want to do good, although mostly they're using us for their purposes) causes chaos and craziness. Unfortunately, I witness too many cases of this here in Kharkov, especially with regards to current NATO PR-campaign. And yes, both Iraq and especially Belgrad were big mistakes. US troops has already killed more civilians, then Saddam Husseyn ever did, ruined the country and lives of millions others, brought fundamentalists to power etc. What kind of hypocrisy is that when they say they bring "peace and democracy"? If this is what "peace and democracy" means, then keep it off of me - I'd rather live under happy dictatorship Regards, Michael Mike Shkolnik wrote: > Michael, > >> And I strongly disagree with Mike regarding Russian propaganda. > Propaganda is very strong in every country. > > But my point is that in most exUSSR countries the people haven't the > democratic elections. > > Look in Russia - Putin is appointed by Elzin (please don't say that people > elected) and now all electorate wait what say Putin about next "President". > Putin will appoint the next person and people will "vote" again. > > This is the style of USSR - there we had the "elections" too and most people > leaved not bad (in economic term) and has the stable future but are you > really want to live in USSR again? And I can name another one hundred thousand individual crimes I will hold you responsible for, as you are doing with the war grave desecration incident. 1) you cannot hold a nation responsible for crimes committed by individuals. If you do, be prepared to undergo it yourself; 2) the desecration was very likely committed by Muslims. It happened shortly after you invaded Iraq, where you slaughtered far more than a handful of innocent people. I see no outrage from you about that, but a lot of outrage about an incident where nobody got hurt, because it happened in France. That's telling. Your measure of justice? 3) your reaction is that of someone who stayed in the pub long after closing time, honestly. |
