<< On the forum bit, just giving you guys my feedback on that and outlining the clear advantages over NNTP these days. As in any business..it's important to keep up with the times.....and the competition. >> We've always considered the fact that we use actual NNTP newsgroups as a competitive *advantage*, not a disadvantage. However, I have noted your issues with the web forums, and will see about addressing them. << Yeah, I use Kasperky here...back then v7 and now v8 and the site has always been slow for me as a whole; and yep...practically every page hangs - it's really strange as I can't think of any site I typically go to that acts this way. I'll disable Kaspersky and see what happens and report back. I've got a 2nd laptop as well...will try the same thing and let you know what happens. >> I believe Kaspersky is one of the products that has caused issues. And, if you look at our web pages, there is a little W3C HTML 4.01 button on the bottom left-hand side of each page that you can click to determine the compliance of our HTML, if you have any concerns about a specific page. -- Tim Young Elevate Software www.elevatesoft.com |

Lance Rasmussen Jazzie Software Team Elevate | Fred,
I use vB for our company's support community. In some regards, it would be nice to see Elevate migrate to that direction, then again, I don't think there is anything wrong with the newsgroups. With the corrent vB, its easier to automate postings for announcements of new versions, where as its easy to automate a newsgroup post. It certainly would provide an easier moderation to limit certain groups to be accessable to paying customers vs prospective customers as well as clamping down on competition viewing postings. However, I've never seen an indication from Tim that it has ever been an issue. It may be more "Web 2.0" and provide some more features, but I wouldn't necessarily say that Elevate is "in the dark ages" by the fact that they are using Newsgroups. "Fred H." | Well...with all this discussion, I'm (grudgingly) back to using
XanaNews. I'm about to install it on on my Vista lappie as well...I hope it works! BTW - has anyone taken the source and updated XanaNews? The last update I have found that Colin did was v1.18.1.6 (2006). Don't get me wrong, Lance...I'm not saying that Elevate is in the "dark ages" because of NNTP....what I am saying, though, is as compared to evolving modern ways for the public to passively communicate with each other via the internet/web (like vB, phpBB, etc)...these surely go above and beyond in features what Usenet always had to offer - security (like protecting email addresses!!!), more personal, user experience, flexibility of customizing a board and everything else I said previously (you know!) + they typically fit perfectly into a site structure/design. In fact...I use this outfit for my domain server and their main website IS a vB board! (albeit an older version) www.httpme.com You bring up another great feature, though, Lance - securing part of a forum from the public that could only be for registered users of a company (Elevate in this case). Like you said...very handy esp. for outfits wanting to protect certain discussions from roaming eyes and to keep issues closer to home. I haven't been keeping up with UseNet like I used to years ago, but I did notice with the advent of GrabIt! back then there's been alot of focus in UseNet for downloading binaries from the newsgroups and alot less on News Readers. I would put money down that a very small percentage of folks out there know even what Usenet is anymore...esp. the younger folks, which should surely be part of the "potential customer" list esp. since Delphi is very much geared towards hobbyists and smaller and up & coming developers. Maybe as a Marketing Major, I'm just guilty of taking more of a notice of things like this and therefore (too) passionate I guess esp. for companies that I really enjoy supporting and see that something like this could help in its marketing efforts. Contrary to Rene accused me of - I'm not shoving this down anyone's throat - I'm just trying to make a good argument "for" this other medium. It's not my company nor is it my decision - I'm just trying to make aware of all the advantages. With the release of ElevateDB, though....I see alot of folks like me are having quite a hard time understanding this new structure and way of doing things as compared to DBISAM, so anything to help us and potential customers...will surely help Elevate. Even doing tutorial videos would help! Shoot...you experts (Team Elevate) should be able to whip out videos in no time! Take those videos and put them on the site....AND on YouTube. Anything to get your name out there more and for folks to have easy, quick access to stuff like that - is always a good thing. TIM - I apologize for the long post...when I get going...I really get going. And PLEASE do not take this thread the wrong way...I mean no disrespect, I'm not going anywhere....just making a suggestion and the advantages. Of course, that's my personal view and not everyone agrees with it - same goes vice-versa. You're right...I wouldn't want to see what you look like either! j/k!! nah man..I'm talking about just doing Tutorial Videos of the screen with voice (or no voice even) - you can see a BUNCH on YouTube demonstrating software and such. Here are a couple of free ones I know of, though...or you can check out the shareware/freeware sites for others: wink - http://www.debugmode.com/wink/ camstudio - http://camstudio.org/ softpedia - video recorders: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Video-Recording/ I managed to get on the Camtasia v3 free offering that TechSmith goofed up on in 2007 (pretty much the defacto screen recorder today). The news got out quickly and by the time they pulled the plug on it...it was already all over the web. LOL http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/11/22/techsmith-offers-free-camtasia-s tudio-download/ |

Preface it with www. and you get what seems to be a one page website with two Chinese (Japanese?) characters. Roy Lambert |

"Fred H." | If you want super, quick support, virtually no downtime, great speed,
and full control....then a resounding: YES they are basically the top-tier in hosting/server space, meaning...all those other host companies that offer less space per whatever...use companies like HttpMe to host and resell. They don't cater to the average joe wanting a host. it's not scandolous, Rita...you really get what you pay for (trust me...I've learned the hard way). Other hosts might give you more space/dollar, but they also max out the server you're on with alot of other clients...therefore creating instability and slowness on the server. Not so with outfits like HttpMe. Here's another reseller host; this is the new host for the guy that started HttpMe - he sold HttpMe out to a guy in California several years back: http://www.dotable.com - notice the similar setup. -- Rita wrote: > > "Fred H." <blue@dhfvr.com> wrote in message > news:F023E3C9-B27A-43BB-BB02-F49A1E0E4286@news.elevatesoft.com... > > > IS a vB board! "Fred H." | shoot Roy....I forgot I had that up there!
the chinese characters mean "double happiness". I used to live in Singapore and Thailand...my wife eventually joined me after a 3 year long-distance relationship while she was finishing up college. dhfvr is just a little lovey dovey thing between my wife and I that we started some time after I moved there - and sent love faxes to each other (no email at the time). =D Anyway...we needed a domain exclusively for personal stuff (mainly emails) and I settled on registering that for us to use. I'm a recovering domain addict...I only own 50 domains now. ;| -- Roy Lambert wrote: > Fred > > > >> Your domain is interesting if as I'm guessing its the back part of > >> your email address.
