Casual Friday for Week Ending April 23rd
Posted by Tim Young on Fri, Apr 23 2010

As I've mentioned before in prior posts, I recently bought a Dell XPS 9000 desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit for my new development machine. I was previously using XP Pro SP3 running on an older Gateway machine (no, I'm not into building my own machines Smile). My move to Windows 7 64-bit is now complete and, all in all, it wasn't too bad considering that I had to move over 16+ development environments, including some like Delphi 5 that are over a decade old.

ElevateDB 2.03 Build 11 Released
Posted by Tim Young on Sat, Apr 17 2010

ElevateDB 2.03 Build 11 is now available for download. If you're an existing customer, then you should be receiving an email shortly with download instructions. This build contains bug fixes for several incident reports, which are detailed here.

ElevateDB 2.03 Build 10 was released on Thursday, but had to be replaced quickly with Build 11 due to two severe issues that were present with the ALTER TABLE statement in Build 10:

# 3185 Using ALTER TABLE To Change the Encrypted Status or Index Page Size Can Corrupt Table

# 3186 Using ALTER TABLE to Add a Primary Key to an Existing Table with No Primary Key Can Cause Corruption

An email notification was sent out to all customers, letting everyone know that you should not use 2.03 Build 10 in any application that uses the ALTER TABLE statement, nor should you use the 2.03 Build 10 release of the ElevateDB Manager to alter tables.

This latest release has some significant performance improvements added for the ALTER TABLE statement, especially when the statement only affects the columns and not the constraints, or vice-versa. These were, unfortunately, the cause of these issues, but should provide some much-needed improvements to complicated schema alterations in your database(s).

Casual Friday for Week Ending April 9th
Posted by Tim Young on Mon, Apr 12 2010

Last Friday was part of Easter weekend, so I skipped the Casual Friday post. The post this week is a little late due to my having to spend last Thursday and Friday switching my development environment from my old Windows XP Pentium D box to a new Dell XPS 9000. I've been putting off the switch to a new machine for at least a year now, dreading what I would encounter when trying to switch everything from XP to Windows 7. Fortunately, things went fairly smoothly and the most time-consuming portion of the switch was simply transferring the 200+GB of data and programs from the XP machine. The big problem I have now is that all of the ElevateDB and DBISAM performance tests are twice as fast, and so I need to re-adjust my point of reference as to what constitutes "fast". Smile
